Putting the puck on net: shot types, release, accuracy, tips and rebounds.

B

Backhand shot: A shot taken off the back side of the blade, hard for goalies to read because it can rise quickly from close in.
Bar downSlang: A shot that hits the underside of the crossbar and drops straight into the net.
Blocker side: The side of the net where the goalie's blocker and stick hand are.
Breakaway goal: A goal scored on a breakaway, with the shooter alone against the goalie.

C

Catch and release: Receiving a pass and shooting in one smooth motion, with a quick catch and an immediate release.
Changing the angle: Moving the puck or your body just before shooting so the goalie has to adjust and leaves an opening.

D

Deflection: Any change in the puck's direction on its way to the net, off a stick, skate or body, whether on purpose or by accident.

E

Empty-net goal: A goal scored into a net with no goalie in it, usually after the other team pulls its goalie late in a game.

F

Far side: The side of the net farthest from the shooter, across the goalie's body.
Finishing: Turning scoring chances into goals, especially in tight around the net.
Follow-through: Finishing the shooting motion with the blade pointing at the target, which controls the accuracy and height of the shot.

G

Glove side: The side of the net where the goalie's catch glove is.

H

Half slap shot: A slap shot with a shorter wind-up, trading some power for a quicker release.
High blocker: A shot location high on the goalie's blocker side, above the blocker.
High glove: A shot location high on the goalie's glove side, above the catch glove and near the top corner.
Hit the post: A shot that rings off the goalpost and stays out, so no goal.

L

Loading the stick: Pressing down so the shaft bends before the puck leaves the blade; the stick snaps back and adds speed to the shot.
Low blocker: A shot location low on the goalie's blocker side, near the ice and the post.
Low glove: A shot location low on the goalie's glove side, near the ice.

O

One-timer: A shot taken straight off a pass, without stopping the puck first.

P

Picking corners: Aiming shots at the corners of the net, the spots goalies have the hardest time covering.
Point shot: A shot from the point, near the offensive blue line, usually by a defenseman and often kept low so teammates can tip it.
Post and in: A shot that hits the goalpost and still goes into the net.

Q

Quick release: Getting a shot off fast, with little or no wind-up, before the goalie can get set.

R

Rebound: A puck that bounces back into play after the goalie makes a save, often giving attackers a second chance to score.

S

Shooting in stride: Shooting while still skating, without stopping or gliding first, so the goalie has less time to read the shot.
Short side: The side of the net closest to the shooter, between the goalie and the near post.
Shot: Any attempt to send the puck toward the net to score.
Shot selection: Choosing when to shoot, where to aim and which shot to use, based on the angle, the goalie's position and the traffic in front.
Slap shot: The hardest shot: a big wind-up and a swing that strikes the ice just behind the puck to bend the stick and fire the puck.
Snap shot: A shot with a short, quick backswing and a hard snap of the stick, mixing some of a slap shot's power with a wrist shot's quick release.

T

Tip: Redirecting a shot or pass on purpose with the stick blade to change its path toward the net.
Toe-drag shot: Pulling the puck in toward the body with the toe of the blade just before shooting, which changes the angle and fools the goalie and defenders.
Top shelf: The top part of the net, just under the crossbar, a hard spot for goalies to cover.

W

Weight transfer: Moving body weight from the back leg to the front leg during a shot to add power.
Wraparound: Carrying the puck behind the net and trying to tuck it in at the other post before the goalie gets across.
Wrist shot: A shot made by sweeping the puck along the blade and snapping the wrists; it is accurate and quick to get off.
