Moving the puck to a teammate and receiving it: pass types, timing and lanes.

A

Area pass: A pass into open ice where a teammate is about to arrive, instead of directly to their stick.

B

Backhand pass: A pass made from the backhand side of the blade, useful when the target is on your backhand side.
Bank pass: A pass played off the boards so it bounces to a teammate or around a defender.
Breakout pass: The pass that moves the puck out of your defensive zone, usually from a defenseman to a forward on the wall or in the middle.
Bump pass: A short, quick pass to a nearby teammate, often to escape a tight spot or set up a better shot.

C

Centering pass: A pass from the side or from behind the net into the slot for a teammate to shoot.
Cross-crease pass: A pass across the front of the crease from one side of the net to the other, one of the hardest plays for a goalie to stop.
Cross-ice pass: A pass from one side of the rink to the other, which can pull the goalie across but is risky if it is picked off in your own end.
Cushioning the puck: Giving with the stick as the puck arrives, like catching an egg, so it does not bounce off the blade.

D

D-to-D pass: A pass between the two defensemen, usually behind or across the zone, to move the puck away from pressure.
Drop pass: Leaving the puck behind for a trailing teammate to pick up, often while crossing the offensive blue line.

F

Forehand pass: A pass made from the forehand side of the blade, sweeping the puck smoothly toward the target.

G

Give-and-go: Passing to a teammate and skating into open space to get the puck right back.

L

Lead pass: A pass aimed ahead of a moving teammate so they skate onto it without slowing down.

N

No-look pass: A pass made while looking somewhere else, to fool defenders and the goalie.

O

One-touch pass: Passing the puck on to a teammate the instant it arrives, without stopping it first.
Outlet pass: A quick pass to a teammate that gets the puck away from pressure and starts the attack the other way.

P

Passing lane: An open path between the puck and a teammate that a pass can travel through without being blocked.
Puck movement: Moving the puck quickly between teammates, which pulls defenders out of position and creates chances.

R

Receiving a pass: Catching a pass on the blade and cushioning it so the puck stays under control.
Reverse pass: A pass back in the opposite direction from where you are skating, often behind the net, to switch sides away from forecheckers.
Rim pass: Firing the puck hard around the boards so it follows the wall to a teammate or out of the zone.
Royal road pass: A pass that crosses the royal road, the imaginary line down the middle of the offensive zone, forcing the goalie to move across and creating dangerous chances.

S

Saucer pass: A pass lifted just off the ice so it floats over sticks and lands flat for the receiver.
Seam pass: A pass through the seam, the open lane between defenders, often to set up a one-timer.
Slap pass: A hard pass made with a short slap-shot motion, often aimed at a teammate's stick for a redirect toward the net.
Stretch pass: A long pass from your own end to a teammate far up the ice, to catch the other team changing or out of position.

T

Tape-to-tape pass: An accurate pass that lands right on a teammate's stick blade, so they can play it without breaking stride.
Through pass: A pass threaded between opponents, through their sticks or skates, to reach a teammate on the other side.
Touch pass: A light, short pass, often just a redirect of an incoming puck, used to move it quickly in tight spaces.
